As Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Captures Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, has always considered the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, detected pops echoing around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a couple who had run up the hill in their swimwear, she noticed someone moving up from behind. This turned out to be a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He was sprinting into something that surely every part of you would signal you to go in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility next to the scene of the incident serving as a temporary hospital. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including going into the water to rescue people who were struggling.

In the days after the tragedy, comments of support circulated widely. One post expressed thanks for the responders who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome hatred”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a message, explaining they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the organization stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it helps those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff acted heroically from the second the shooting commenced through to late that evening.

“There have been so many emotional accounts, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic beaches safe for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
