California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom stated when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any determination is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
He has emerged as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened revoking the power to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, in the wake of a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.
His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously announced he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a recent comment addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A recent survey revealed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, Newsom stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The thought that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he stated. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
