Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a ādeceptive figure and a liarā and accusing him of having āa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.ā Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.
āI think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this election is,ā the mayor stated.
Adams continued, āThey have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and Iām going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.ā
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent announced they would reject Adamsās endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adamsās cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, āIāll be with Andrew later today.ā
This development came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicksā season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
