Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
