Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who once led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood his decision to depart.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Political Context
This development arrives after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.
Email Contents
A collection of financier-linked messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to connect the official to prominent world leaders.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the general audience, he said he accepted "total ownership for my misguided judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be associated with the group.
Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
