Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
